What’s the opportunity about?

Unbabel is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to manage a high-performing Engineering team responsible for one of the company’s key areas: the development and maintenance of critical systems and APIs that power Unbabel’s products and operations, as well as overseeing delivery management to ensure timely and high-quality releases.

To be successful in this role, you need to be a people-oriented engineering manager; great at giving and receiving feedback, fostering new ideas, and empowering others in a hybrid environment. You also need proven software engineering skills with the ability to understand technical architectures, system design, and the ability to understand tradeoffs. You’re able to optimize for a healthy development flow by creating the right environment for your team to develop the best possible solutions. Additionally, you must excel in delivery management by coordinating cross-functional teams, managing project timelines, and ensuring that deliverables meet both quality standards and business requirements.


  • Support a team of software engineers to plan and support the development and support Unbabel’s core business;
  • Hands-on support and timely delivery of technical solutions to address business needs;
  • Work closely with other functional leads to help deliver best-in-class software and world-renowned products;
  • Support the definition of the team’s KPIs, taking into account the team backlog and the company priorities;
  • Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices and help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices;
  • Facilitate collaboration with other engineering teams, product managers and product designers to solve exciting and challenging problems across the platform;
  • Set and monitor performance goals for teams and individuals, providing feedback through reviews, one-on-ones, and regular discussions;
  • Play a key role in supporting us to attract, develop and retain great engineering talent;
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company values.


Must have:

  • Demonstrated previous experience in leading teams of engineers across all levels of skill and experience, with a track record of managing, recruiting, and retaining engineering talent in mid-sized teams;
  • Mastery of software engineering fundamentals and a proven track record of shipping high-quality software;
  • A love for mentoring and growing people, and have a track record of doing it;
  • A continuous improvement mindset, while encouraging a healthy engineering culture.

Nice to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalency in relevant engineering work experience;
  • Familiarity with Jira, Gitlab, Slack and standard Google productivity tools.
